Advanced oro-maxillo-facial surgery in rabbits

Piezoelectric Surgery & Ultrasonic Wound Debridement

The advent of piezoelectric surgery has profoundly transformed the paradigm of mineralized tissue surgery.
Based on ultrasonic micro-oscillations, this technology enables selective cutting of bone while preserving soft tissues, minimizing intraoperative bleeding, preventing thermal necrosis, and promoting faster healing.
In rabbit maxillo-facial surgery, where bone fragility, limited surgical fields, dense caseous pus, and proximity to critical neurovascular structures significantly increase surgical risk, piezoelectric instrumentation represents a major advancement.

In this species, traditional rotary instruments may increase the risk of iatrogenic mandibular fractures, damage to the infraorbital nerve, or trauma to the retrobulbar venous sinus. The piezoelectric technique allows controlled osteotomies with minimal applied pressure, offering superior intraoperative control and enhanced safety in complex procedures such as extraoral cheek teeth extraction, osteomyelitis management, tympanic bulla osteotomy, and advanced abscess surgery.
Furthermore, ultrasonic wound debridement (UWD) plays a crucial role in postoperative management of infected tissues.
Through cavitation and selective removal of necrotic tissue, ultrasonic debridement enhances antibacterial activity, reduces biofilm load, decreases exudate, and significantly shortens healing time, often without the need for general anesthesia.

This minimally invasive adjunct is particularly valuable in rabbits affected by chronic abscessation and osteomyelitis.
This experience will allow the student to enrich his knowledge and perfect the way of treatment clinical cases with a latest generation tool, guaranteeing a tangible impact on daily work.
